for the topic

“Strain-induced recombination dynamics in semiconductor nanostructures”

Low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures are an often-used playground to study quantum effects. By now, systems with reduced dimensions, e.g., Quantum Wells, Quantum Wires or Quantum Dots are also used to build electronic devices, for example efficient laser diodes or high mobility transistors. In this project we are mainly interested in radiative transitions of excitons in such semiconductor nanostructures. In particular, we investigate semiconductors which are designed such that even small deformations of the structure have a large impact on the recombination probability of the excitons. This is achieved by using indirect band-gap materials that convert into direct band-gap semiconductors after a lattice strain is applied. The aim is to develop systems where an externally induced deformation can drive a function such as the emission of single photons for quantum cryptography. The strain is generated optically using tailored sequences of ultrashort light pulses which are absorbed in the sample. This approach paves the way for ultrafast, strain-driven applications which are in the focus of this project.

The tasks of this experimental thesis involve preparing and performing time-resolved experiments on semiconductor nanostructures using ultrafast lasers and synchrotron- or lab-based x-ray sources. Data analysis and minor simulation tasks complement the work program. The laboratories are located in the IKZ-DESY JointLab in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld.


  • MSc degree in physics, materials science, Nanoscience or in a related discipline

Prior experience in the following fields is an asset to your application:

  • Hands-on experience with lasers and experimental optical setups
  • Design, fabrication and characterization of semiconductor nanostructures
  • Strong background in solid state physics especially in optical characterization methods (Raman, Ellipsometry etc.)
  • Knowledge in X-ray physics

The position is limited to three years. Payment is according to TVöD (75%) (Treaty for German public service).
